Description This minor setting for guitar duo is from the arrangement by Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841); his version, in turn, is based on one of Antoine Romangnesi's (1781-1850) "Romances".

'Le nid et la rose' is the first of what Carulli's publisher terms, "Romances favorites de A. Romagnesi" - according to the title page of the 1831 edition. Whether it is actually Romagnesi 's original composition is obscured by the fact that he is known to have written "romances", but was also a music publisher and theorist. For example, one of his books is entitled, "Oeuvres choisies: 100 mélodies favorites. " This suggests he was a collector and publisher of existing, popular songs .

Moreover, is evident that Carulli was not the only guitarist to set this tune as a duet: see the works of Francesco Molino (1768-1847) for comparable setting, and under the simple title of, "Romanza."

Performance notes:

The performers can play Carulli's (or Molino's) version in D, then this setting in the relative minor, then Carulli's (or Molino's) again in the classic rondeau form. I worked out the transition back to the major key with chromatics, and it provides a simple, sensible and seamless segue. This approach works well by providing contrasting material, interesting sonorities for the guitar, and, hopefully, a more challenging and rewarding experience for the musicians.

Great for intermediate guitar students!
